Current promotions and other offers

There are several offers happening right now that are worth mentioning. Some are targeted and some aren’t, so check your email to see if you have been targeted for any of those that require an invitation:

USAirways

U.S. Airways MasterCard 5x bonus categories through 12/31/13 (targeted):
Those with the U.S. Airways MasterCard can take advantage of 5 points per dollar spent on gas stations, restaurants and department store purchases until December 31, 2013. Since U.S. Airways miles are eventual American miles, this is a really good promotion to take advantage of. The spending limit to max out the bonus is $500, or 2,500 miles.

TopCashBack friends referral bonus is up to $15:
TopCashBack is a pretty bad cash back portal because of their lengthy processing times and sometimes difficult tracking of your purchases, but I use them since I’m a creature of habit so they are the first cash back portal I think about when I make purchases. Regardless, a $15 referral fee for friends signing up is pretty good and I would try to refer some friends to take advantage of this promotion. You friend must earn at least $10 in cash back for you to get paid.

Hilton Honors 6 extra bonus points in addition to regular rate of 5 points (total 13 points per dollar):
Again, I hate Hilton for destroying their award chart earlier this year, but if you do stay at Hilton for business regularly, and I do know readers who do, I would register anyway since you never know where your plans can take you. The promotion is for stays between 11/20/13 to 2/28/14.

United and U.S. Airways bonus miles:
United has several promotions through their shopping portal, but the one that sticks out is the 30 miles per dollar spent at FTD.com. Similarly, U.S. Airways is offering 12 miles per dollar at eBags. This isn’t as generous as American Airline’s 35 miles per dollar promotion last month, but it’s still a pretty good offer if you’re looking for a new travel bag.

Purchasing miles with U.S. Airways:
Finally, U.S. Airways is offering 100% bonus miles again when you purchase or gift miles, up to 50,000 bonus, so you can potentially buy 100,000 miles for a total of $1,881.25 (includes taxes and fees). Similarly, American is running a promotion where you can earn up to 18,000 bonus miles for purchasing up to 60,000 miles.

We are getting ready to pay our property taxes by credit card to the tune of about $15,000 at the end of the year. Thinking this would be great for meeting a minimum spend on a new card. I missed the BA card deal(drat). What would be the best card(s) for us to try to get? We have two ink cards, but I guess there are two more we could get. Or do you have a better idea?

Jana, you have to factor in what the credit card fee is by paying your property taxes. Usually the fees charged by taxing authorities are a percentage and it doesn’t quite make sense for the points you would earn. It really depends. What kind of minimum spending are you trying to meet, how much, and for what credit cards?
