$20 off $300 or more in Visa or MasterCard gift cards

OfficeMax has an ongoing promotion all the way to December 27, 2014, where they giving a $20 discount on Visa or MasterCard gift cards purchases of least $300 in value. There is a limit of two $20 discounts per customer. There are mixed reports that you can purchase both $300 values on one transaction and get the $20 discount twice on the same transaction, but this hasn’t been the case in my experience. If I had to guess you will probably need to do two separate transactions.

Since each $200 gift card has a $6.95 activation fee, the best way to maximize the savings is by purchasing three $200 cards. That way you will receive $40 off, $600 in value for the cards, and after the activation fees pay only $580.85, so you will make a profit. You should also try to pay with a card that maximizes spending at office supplies stores, such as the Ink Plus card. That way you will earn 5 points per dollar spent, or 2,904 free Ultimate Rewards points.

This is also an excellent way to meet minimum spending, since Visa debit cards can be easily loaded into Serve and used to pay bills online.

I purchased $800 worth of cards last night and split into two transactions to use two different credit cards I’m currently working on minimum spending for.

wondering where you saw this promotion. i’m not seeing it in the weekly ad of my local office depot. maybe it’s only at former office max locations?

Nadball, there’s a hat tip at the bottom of the article to the user who brought it up. I don’t believe is on the weekly ad. The store employee simply needs to find it in their barcodes book and ring it up for you. It’s been reported that you can ring up $600 worth of cards and get $40 back, but I haven’t tried it personally. I actually went to my local OM store a couple of hours ago and they were out of $200 cards.

Thanks for posting this. I’ve been hitting both OM’s in my area everyday…about $6k in $200 gcs. Lots of UR points and cashback!
