Booking my SPG stay before the price went up

Late last month we decided to plan an impromptu trip to Toronto and upstate New York to see Niagara Falls, which my wife had never visited. We decided to fly into Buffalo, rent a car, and do the drive to Toronto, see that beautiful city, stay overnight, and then head back to Niagara Falls.

We started looking around for hotels to stay in Niagara Falls, and we noticed that the Four Points by Sheraton, a category 2 hotel, was going for only 3,000 points per night. Even more, that hotel was on the current SPG list of hotels which were being moved to a higher category as of March 5th, 2013, as we described in this article. After that date, the hotel price would go up to a Category 3 hotel, and from 3,000 to 7,000 points per night.

Our stay was for March 9th, so we went ahead and booked 2 rooms for us and our family right away, for a total of only 6,000 points. By booking the room before March 5th, we were able to save 4,000 points per room and a total of 8,000 points, which in SPG terms is very valuable, since these points are my #1 currency of choice.

On a later post we will include a review of the hotel, which is in a great and beautiful location, perfect for Niagara Falls visitors.
