Krystal Grand Punta Cancun – Review

For the second time this year I have booked stays with Hyatt and they have then sold the property before my stay.  The first time was at the St. Martin property and now at the Krystal Grand Punta Cancun.  Luckily Hyatt confirmed that the Krystal was honoring the stays as well as the Diamond status.

This hotel is located on the northeastern tip of the zona hotelera and only a few blocks from the clubs and restaurants.  This worked out perfect as we didn’t have to take a cab or bus other that to get to/from the airport.

There are quite a few clubs and bars in the area.  If you want to have a good time at the clubs but not deal with lines or the street reps selling tickets, check out the folks at Cuncrawl.  We booked a night with them and they made for an awesome time checking out 3 different clubs!  Basically entrance and alcohol is covered at all 3 clubs with your ticket.

I originally booked three nights; two nights on award points for only 8,000 a night and one night with a free night voucher from the Hyatt Visa.  Cancun is a sweet spot on the British Airways Avios award chard as it is only 9,000 Avios points round trip per person from Miami! In summary, only 16K Hyatt points and 18K Avios for a long weekend for two in Cancun!  I’ll take that any day!

The check-in process was a little bumpy as they had trouble finding one of my nights but after a few searches they managed to find it.  Also they did not have me flagged as Diamond nor did the reservation have any upgrade or club access flag but after showing him the email from Hyatt they clarified it and gave me Altitude club room access (Altitude is the name of their club room) and they also gave us a room on the top floor.

Benefits for “Status”

Their club room works very similar to Hyatt’s in that it offers breakfast and appetizers in the afternoon although theirs also includes alcoholic drinks in the afternoon.  Lucky for me though the hotel’s occupancy was low and they offered full buffet breakfast at the restaurant at no charge.  In the afternoon they allowed us to order from the restaurant at no additional charge either.  Shrimp scampi (awesome!), sushi rolls, and other tasty treats!

Although not a suite, the room was rather good and most importantly clean.  Balcony was a nice plus.

Kids Area and Pool

If you happen to be traveling with kids they have a playground on property as well as a kids club.  Also the pool is rather nice.  My only complaint here is that there was no hot tub.

This beach ranks up there for me.  Sand is like powder and the hotel has plenty of beach huts available to guests.

Gotta Love the Beach!

Overall, I wish we could still book this hotel at 8K points a night as I would return in a heart beat, but that’s the way this game goes…  There is a new Hyatt Zilara all inclusive resort in Cancun which we’ll have to try next time!
