Hotel Excelsior – Naples – Review

While in Rome we ventured out to Napoli (Naples) for a few days.  We managed to book the Hotel Excelsior for only 12,000 points per night.  This is a Category 5 property which is part of the SPG Luxury Collection.

This property is just absolutely stunning!  In a way I felt out of place.  If you have ever seen the movie “French Kiss” I felt like Meg Ryan at the Hotel George V.

The hotel has a good amount of history and is a go to place for many big names whenever they visit Naples.  The hotel was originally built in 1907, later damaged in 1943 during the war, and then rebuilt in 1947.    Some of the big names of people who have stayed here include Sir Winston Churchill, Alfred Hitchcock, Hillary Clinton, Luciano Pavarotti, Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Humphrey Bogart, and many others.

The check-in process was very smooth and quick.  I will note that it was the first time I have had a hotel attendant personally show me to my room!  I was recognized for having SPG Gold status and was upgraded to a slightly bigger room.

The rooms are just stunning.  Cloth wall covering, towel heater, solid wood floors, DND and shade controls next to the bed, and a wonderful view.

The view from the room was great but the hotel also has a Sundeck on the top floor which offers great views of the Naples and Vesuvius.  The morning that I decided to go up there it was actually drizzling, but the view was still enjoyable.

Surrounding Area

There are a number of restaurants in the immediate vicinity.  The train station is only about 15 minutes away by taxi and the old town is about a 30 minute walk away.  One afternoon, we managed to walk from the train station to the old town and then back to the hotel.  We took our time but it was a really enjoyable walk.

The old town is really a marvel to walk around.  There are lots of tiny streets which I recommend you immerse yourself in to get the real Napoli feel.

In a subsequent post we’ll mention a little more about the old town, subterranean Naples, and pizza!
