Holiday Inn – Austin NW Arboretum

We stayed at the Holiday Inn – Austin NW Arboretum for one night when we arrived in Austin for our Austin MegaDo weekend. I chose this hotel, which is a bit out of the way from downtown, because of its price, as I needed one night at a Holiday Inn as part of my IHG Big Win promotion requirements. To put a dent in some of the promotion items, I booked their Best Flexible Rate with breakfast, at $120.

The hotel is about a 20 minute drive from downtown, and finding it was a bit tricky, so I recommend using some sort of GPS or phone app.

Check-in:

Check-in was easy as there weren’t any other guests when we arrived. For breakfast, I was given a $20 voucher credit to use the next morning. More on that later.

Lobby:

The hotel looks very modern, although I didn’t like that half of the rooms face the atrium below. Our room, although we didn’t use it much, faced the highway and was on the top 4th floor, so it had a lot more privacy.

There is also a small fitness room right next to the pool.

Room:

The room was very nicely decorated, and housekeeping had even made some towel animals prior to our arrival. Bonus points when it came time to tip!

The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of space to move around.

The bathroom had the sink outside, and it could really use some additional counter space. For two people is a bit tight as there wasn’t much room to put our stuff.

We showered and went straight to bed and clocked 8 solid hours of sleep.

Breakfast:

As I mentioned earlier, at check-in we received a $20 voucher to pay for breakfast. I was disappointed to see this, since I didn’t know what the menu prices were, and in my experience $20 doesn’t feed two people at a hotel. Some of the room service items were even more than $10.

We went to the restaurant for breakfast and ended up each getting one entree and milk and juice, and our bill ended up being $0.22, so I just had to tip out of pocket. Most items on the menu cost around $10, so while most of the breakfast cost should be covered, I still think the hotel should disclose in advance that their Best Flexible Rate with Breakfast only includes a $20 voucher. Given that the Breakfast rate was $20 higher than their regular rate, you’re essentially paying for your breakfast.

Service was good and the food tasted great.

The hotel has a pretty nice coffee station set up by the front desk. Besides coffee, they had whipped cream and a couple of flavored syrups to add to the coffee.

Overall impression:

While this hotel is out of the way if you have business in downtown and I don’t anticipate staying again, if this area works out for you I would definitely recommend this property. The staff was great and I think they maximize the resources they have to give the hotel guests a good experience.
