What just happened? Interesting fluke on Hilton’s tracking system

Last month during our trip to San Diego we stayed at the DoubleTree San Diego Downtown for one night (review to follow in the next few days) strictly on points. I had 30,00o points I needed to burn, so I booked a room for the night.

Since we got in late, I had dinner at the bar and charged the bill to my room, expecting to get the usual 10 points per dollar for the $27 or so I spent at the bar. In fact, that was all my hotel bill was for.

A few days ago, I logged into my Hilton account and noticed something that shouldn’t have been there:

HiltonI earned the 1,000 bonus points from the Weekend promotion that I had signed up for back in January.  I know for a fact, based on their terms and conditions, that rewards stays are specifically excluded from the promotion. However, since I charged dinner to the room, it appears that their tracking system counted the stay as a paid stay, however cheap the “room rate” of $27 was.

While the promotion is already over, the moral of the story is that if you have reward stays coming up and there are any similar promotions going on, if it makes sense to you, it wouldn’t hurt charging a bit of money to the room whether by buying a bottle of water, snack or something cheap. Your next reward stay might just count as a paid stay and you might earn bonus points while you’re at it.

FYI – Award stays at Hilton family properties do count toward elite status. This is not a fluke.

Ben, you’re right on the elite status qualification. I revised the post with respect to this. However, it is definitely a fluke when it comes to the promotion and the bonus points associated with it. The weekend points promotion fine print specifically excludes reward stays, so the bonus points shouldn’t have posted.
