Registration for Discover 5% second quarter cash back now open

Registration for the 2nd quarter (April 1 through June 30, 2014) is now open once you log in to your Discover account. The second quarter category is home improvement stores, furniture stores and Bed Bath & Beyond.

DiscoverI love the Home Improvement category. Just like I did last year, this is an easy $75, since Lowe’s (and now many Home Depot stores) sells plenty of gift cards to different merchants. When this bonus category kicks in, I just run to the nearest Lowe’s and restock on gas, restaurant and Amazon gift cards and get an automatic 5% cash back.

Lowe'sThe current first quarter category is restaurants and movie theaters, and it ends March 31st. Each quarter’s 5% cash back tops out at $1,500 of spending, or $75. You also earn 1% cash back on all other purchases over that amount or outside of those categories.

Discover also offers many ways to make your cash back go even further by giving you extra value when redeeming the cash for gift cards and gift certificates. The Frequent Miler has a good update on this article describing how the redemptions work.

If you don’t currently carry the Discover card and want to take advantage of these bonus categories, you can apply for the card here. However, the best offer we are currently aware of is NOT using this link. There is a current offer where if you are referred by a current cardmember, both you and the cardmember each get $50 cash back when you make a purchase, any purchase on your card within the first 3 months. If you are interested in applying and have any friends or family that already have the card, you can get them to send you a referral link. Otherwise, we would be happy to send you our own link if you need one so you can earn the $50 cash back, which is better than the standard offer. Just drop us a line with your full name at

Disclosure: We do receive a commission if you are approved for this card using our referral link above. As always, thank you for reading our site.
