Best current credit card offers

There are several current credit card offers that merit mentioning as they are offering significantly higher than usual sign up bonuses. The offers below are the best public offers we’re currently aware of:

Chase Ink Plus card – 70,000 bonus points:

The usual sign up bonus for this card is 50,000 Ultimate Rewards (UR) points, so the additional 20,000 points makes it really worthwhile going for either card if you don’t have it. The offer requires you to spend $5,000 within the first 3 months of obtaining the card. While the $95 annual fee is not waived the first year, the extra 70,000 points are definitely worth more than the annual fee.

The catch with this increased sign up offer is that you have to apply at a Chase branch. It is not available online.

Chase UR points are extremely valuable due to their flexibility, and you can transfer them 1:1 to many airlines and hotel programs, such as Marriott, IHG, Hyatt, Southwest, United, Singapore Airlines, Korean Air, British Airways and many others. You can also use the points to book free flights, hotels and car rentals, like I did to save almost $200 on this particular occasion on a car rental during the First2Board Seattle Sessions.

Chase Marriott Rewards credit card – 70,000 bonus points plus a free night:

While this is not really a card for everyday spending outside of actual Marriott properties, the current bonus is very generous and the card also comes with a free night certificate on a Category 1-4 property. In my experience the 1-4 properties are not always convenient or easy to find, and the free night certificate expires in 6 months, although in many cases based on my past experience Marriott will give you a 6-month courtesy extension if you haven’t been able to use the certificate in the first 6 months (although not guaranteed). We were able to use our free night certificate during a June visit to Miami on a property that was going for around $110 per night, so it was a pretty decent return of value. The 70,000 bonus points can get you on a nice property such as the Boscolo Budapest for 2 nights, just as one of our readers did last year.

Boscolo Budapest – 35,000 points per night

Offer requires you to spend $2,000 within the first 3 months of obtaining the card. The card comes with an annual fee of $85, but it comes with an annual free night certificate for a Category 5 hotel in lieu of the annual fee. I was able to use my own certificate last weekend at the Residence Inn Bellevue to save almost $200. The certificate for this offer is good for 6 months from the date of issuance, but it gives you a lot more flexibility since at the higher category it includes a lot more properties where you can use the certificate. Here is the application link.

U.S. Airways Premier World MasterCard – 40,000 bonus miles:

Barclays’ had temporarily increased the signup bonus for this card to 50,000 when you made a balance transfer, although this offer is no longer available. The regular offer is 40,000 U.S. Airways miles with an $89 annual fee (not waived the first year).

USAirwaysThe reason why this offer is great is because it doesn’t require any minimum spending (it only requires you to use the card once), and it won’t be around much longer as American and U.S. Airways complete their impending merger, with American being the surviving airline. Since U.S. Airways miles will become American miles after the merger if finalized, you’re essentially getting 40,000 eventual American miles for $89 without having to do any spending. Here’s the application link.

Chase United Mileage Plus Explorer – up to 55,000 miles:

Now through September 2, 2014, this card is currently offering 50,000 United miles after you spend $2,000 within the first 3 months of card membership. The card comes with an annual fee of $95, but it is waived the first year. The card also comes with no foreign transaction fees, priority boarding, a free checked bag, and 2 United Club passes per year. There are also reports of another link floating around where you can get this same offer plus an additional $50 statement credit, but YMMV.

You get an additional 5,000 miles when you add an authorized user and that user makes a purchase within 3 months.
