Amex Business Gold card 50,000 points offer making the rounds

Amex has a current public offer for 50,000 membership rewards bonus points after spending $5,000 within the first 3 months of getting the card. The $175 annual fee is waived for the first year, and this card usually requires a much higher spending than the current minimum required. This is a charge card, so all charges are due in full every month.

The offer terms and conditions say the welcome bonus is not available to applicants who have had this product or any other Business Gold, Green or Platinum card within the past 12 months.

Membership Reward points are valuable because you can transfer them to several airline and hotel programs such as British Airways, Delta, Virgin America, Hilton, Choice Hotels and SPG (although airline transfers usually give you better value than hotels). Their value has declined somewhat over the past year or so, but you can still get a lot of value out of them by transferring them to British Airways to fly on AA, as this example shows. Historically there have also been transfer bonuses as high as 50% to some of these programs, so you can stretch your points even further.

In reality, you do not need to own a business in the traditional sense to apply for a business card, as explained in this article.

Keep in mind that this offer also comes around every now and then, and a few times in the past year the sign up bonus has been higher, at 75,000 points. The spending requirement has been higher too, with $10,000 required over the first 4 months. If you want to maximize the bonus and aren’t in an immediate need of these points, keep this card’s history in mind. If you want a lower spending requirement and need points right away, maybe this offer is for you.
