American Express 35% transfer bonus to British Airways

American Express is currently running a promotion for 35% transfer bonus to British Airways, so if you’ve been sitting on some Amex points, this might be a good time to do a transfer. The promotion is available until June 7th.

Flying British Airways is expensive even on points, because of their fuel surcharges. However, Avios are valuable because you can use them to fly relatively short distance domestic flights on American Airlines, their One World partner. For instance, you can fly from Miami to Puerto Rico roundtrip on AA for 15,000 Avios per person. Alternatively, for the same amount of points you can fly Miami to Las Vegas like I did on my March trip and also get free Priority Boarding on AA when you book through British Airways.

To take advantage of this transfer, log in to your American Express online account, go to the Rewards tab, and select Use Points, then Airlines. You can transfer Amex points in 1,000 increments, and the system will calculate it for you:

I will personally be sitting this one out. Last year there were a couple of 40% and 50% transfer bonuses, so I will speculatively wait for a higher amount. Since both me and my wife have a ton of Avios on our account (about 207,000 combined), we’re not in an immediate need for points. If you are planning a trip that’s close enough and you could use the points, this is a good time to transfer. It all depends on your personal situation, but 35% is a pretty good bonus regardless.

Are you planning on taking advantage of this bonus? What are some of the trips you could plan with Avios?
