Use Visa or MasterCard at Costco?!

Costco stores have historically accepted American Express, Debit, or of course CASH!  Well, if you are working towards a minimum spend bonus on a Visa or MasterCard and like us you shop a lot Costco, there’s a solution.

Oddly enough, Costco accepts Visa, MasterCard, and even Discover on their website.  In addition to that they sell Costco Cash Cards on their site.  The cash cards can be purchased in denominations up to $1,000 and come with no purchase or shipping fees.

Features of the Costco Cash Cards:

  • A convenient payment option in our warehouses, gas stations, and
  • No expiration date
  • Are rechargeable at any Costco warehouse location
  • Can be purchased in denominations from $25 to $1,000
  • Balance can be accessed on, the warehouse “red kiosk” or by calling the toll-free number on the back of the card

This is just one way we meet our minimum spends on the many bonuses we are constantly working on.

I am new to this credit card miles and minimum spend thing. My wife and I each got the Chase Ink Plus cards and now need to meet the minimum spend of 5k each. When shopping at a grocery store for gift cards, do you suggest that I buy Visa gift cards and then can we load these on to our BlueBird card? If yes how?

Costco stores accept MC but not VISA credit cards. Of course, debit cards are OK. Charge Amazon payments for minimum spending. You make payments to spouse who deposits them in a separate bank or credit union account. This is “recycling” your charging funds to repay charges. See Amazon about payments after you each open Amazon accounts. Not too greedy-not too much at a time.

Jerry, I’m not aware of any Costco stores that accept MC. To my knowledge they only accept Amex, debit, cash or checks. What store are you using a MC at, and is it an actual MC issued by a bank, or just a debit card that says MC on it?

Costco in Plano, Texas on US 75.
Citi AAdvantage Business MC. Get the various Citi AAdvantage cards for a lot of bonus AA miles. I’m not sure if Costco accepts Citi AMEX cards or only their own AMEX card.

        • travelguys says:

Really? That’s odd, but if it works, even better then. And yes, Costco takes any type of Amex, not just their own. I use my SPG Amex all the time.

Good to know! We spend a lot at Costco but are not always working on an AMEX minimum spend. When that happens, I hate using an AMEX card over one that does have a minimum spend I need to make. This is a great way to get that done. Thanks again. And Happy 4th!

I am curious, Can I purchased this card and transfer money from my bank to shop at costco and earn miles? I shop in costco a lot.

    • travelguys says:

Alexsandra, if I’m following your question correctly, no. This is just like any other gift card. You purchase it from Costco with your credit card and earn miles for the purchase. Then use the card at Costco to shop. They are not reloadable to my knowledge, and if they were I don’t think you could earn points for doing so.

What’s the deal in costco about MS I can’t figure this out? Please tell me the secret 🙂

    • travelguys says:

I don’t use Costco to MS. I simply purchase their gift cards online since they let you pay for them with any credit card, not just Amex, and then I just use them at the store. It’s a good way to be able to use other cards at Costco if you’re working on a minimum spending for something other than Amex.

Can you use an American Express Bluebird card it a Costco warehouse as payment.

When purchasing a “Cash Card” for Costco online with my credit card will it be charged as a “Cash Advance” or a normal Credit Card Purchase?
