Just got my Southwest Companion Pass!

Last month I wrote about how I was making a run at the Southwest Companion pass, which once earned, will let your designated companion fly with you for the rest of the year in which you earn the pass, and also the entire next year. So by earning the pass early in 2013, I was going have it available for both 2013 and 2014.

After meeting the required minimum spending on both the Southwest personal and business cards and getting a total of 110,000 Rapid Reward points in my account, yesterday I logged in and saw this message on my Southwest account:

SW companion pass

This means that now for the next two years I get to fly a companion (my wife) on each of my flights completely free, both in revenue and award flights. We had already planned a trip for next month to see Niagara Falls and Toronto, and had booked it with Southwest points. So I went online and added her as my companion (you have to designate the person and enter all their information on the site), and then we cancelled the original flights, since Southwest lets you cancel without any penalties (yes, we’re talking to you, AA, Delta, United and U.S. Airways!) and re-booked using the companion pass for half the points!

Our departing flight had been originally booked for 13,000 points per person, or 26,00o points total. Not only did we re-book for half the points, but the flight award had been reduced to  8,340 points per person, so we saved even more. On the return, the flight was still 20,700 points, and we re-booked 2 for the price of 1.

Total roundtrip original price: 67,400 Rapid Reward points.

Total revised price: 29,040 Rapid Reward points.

Saved:  38,360 points!

I love the Companion Pass!
