Get in on the U.S. Airways MasterCard while you still can

The American and U.S. Airways merger has resulted in the largest airline in the world, with American Airlines being the survivor of the two of them, but with their frequent flyer programs being combined. While some changes to the program are expected, there is no doubt that American Airlines miles are significantly more valuable than U.S. Airways miles. You can use AA miles for stopover awards through major cities like Miami, NY, Chicago, L.A., etc., and you can buy one-way tickets for half the price of a full-fare, which you currently cannot do with U.S. Airways.

If experience is any indication of things to come, it is expected that both currencies will eventually join, and for a while prior to that, you should be able to transfer miles within the two programs for free, just like it happened a couple of years ago with the Continental and United merger.

That being said, there is a great offer out there for the U.S. Airways MasterCard, which is currently offering 40,000 bonus miles when you first use the card (no minimum spending required). This card is expected to disappear in the not so distant future, and when it does, the opportunity to earn an easy 40,000 miles will be gone.

When the time comes, you should then be able to transfer those U.S. Airways miles to American for free and get a lot more free travel out of it than you would had you kept them in U.S. Airways.

It’s anyone’s guess as to how long this card will be around, but if history is any indication, it will not be long. If you want free and easy AA miles for an award travel, I would get this card right away.

Hi Jason. Congratulations on getting the card! The points post as soon as the first statement closes, within a day or two at the most, so watch out for them. Keep us posted.
