Barclays really stepped it up and gave me 20,000 miles!

A couple of weeks ago we wrote about a promotion where you can earn 5,000 to 10,000 U.S. Airways miles per each successful referral of your U.S. Airways MasterCard to friends and family (up to 50,000 miles).

The problem is that the promotion system link doesn’t seem to work in many cases. There are widespread reports about people not being able to send the referrals to their friends, and the emails aren’t being delivered. It’s very frustrating, as I’ve had at least 5 friends who are interested in the card and I haven’t been able to refer them! Two of them have already gone ahead and applied for the card on their own.

I reached out to Barclays by phone to report the problem and voice my displeasure with the website not working, and I had probably the most frustrating conversation in the history of customer service. The rep didn’t seem to understand what my issue was, even after explaining it several times. At some point after 30 minutes I gave up and sent another email venting my frustrations not only about the problem itself, but the lack of support I received from the prior customer service rep. A couple of hours later I received an email saying I would get a phone call from a supervisor.

A couple of days later, I received a call and I was essentially told they were very sorry, and that they knew about the problem and were working on it. They also told me that they would give me 500 miles for my inconvenience. I told the rep that I didn’t feel 500 miles was an appropriate compensation, especially since I had just missed out on referring two of my friends at 10,000 miles each, so 500 miles instead of 20,000 was not an appropriate amount. She placed me on a brief hold and told me she would see what she could do. After a couple of minutes she came back and said they would give me the 20,000 miles to “make it right” and make up for the two referrals I had missed out on. I was thrilled!

The rep told me that the miles would post on 6-8 weeks. While the miles haven’t “posted” to my U.S. Airways account, the next day the miles were already showing on my Barclays miles tally on my credit card:

BarclaysHats off to Barclays for making things right and giving me credit for my two friends!

If you’ve been in a similar situation the past few days, I recommend you reach out to Barclays (preferably in writing, via email) to explain the situation and see if you have any luck getting them to fix the issue for you.

This is a great time to apply for the Barclays U.S. Airways MasterCard, as this card is going away in the not so distant future, and the sign up bonus is at an all-time high of 50,000 miles just for using the card for one purchase ($89 annual fee not waived). If you need a referral for the card, we’d be happy to send you one. Just drop us a line at travelguys AT freetravelguys DOT com
