Don’t forget to book Southwest flights before April 1st devaluation

Last year Southwest announced that they are devaluating their points effective April 1st, 2014. Since then I have been booking all my Southwest flights for this year, and yesterday I was actually able to rebook an upcoming flight at a lower amount of points, which is why I LUV Southwest so much.

SouthwestThe time for the devaluation has finally arrived. Effective April 1st, it will cost you more points to book flights, from the current 60 points per dollar to 70 points, or a 17% increase.

If you have any upcoming trips, I would spend a bit of time this weekend and look through award ticket options, and even if you’re not sure, I would make a speculative booking that you can simply cancel or rebook later if your plans change. Depending on where you’re going or the amount of people traveling, it could mean a lot of points saved.

On another note, I received an email yesterday from Southwest giving me the option to either buy or gift points through April 9, 2014, and receive an additional 30% bonus points.

SouthwestThe offer looks targeted, but check your email and your spam folder and see if you have received a similar offer (feel free to post on comments section below) and if you need additional points to top off an account for an award to book at the lower rate before the devaluation kicks in, now is the time to do it.
