Getting to Las Vegas for free with British Airways Avios

A few days ago we flew to Sin City to enjoy the lights, the sounds and the shows of what the city has to offer. We saw the hotels, gambled a little, and saw a Cirque du Soleil show.

To get there, we flew American Airlines, but we did not use American miles. Instead, we took advantage of the massive amount of British Airways Avios that we’ve accumulated over the past 18 months due to several promotions and Amex transfer bonuses.

Avios are the currency of British Airways, but they usually do not offer the best value when using them to fly on BA metal, because of the high fuel surcharges. Instead, you get a better value by using those miles to fly American Airlines, their OneWorld partner.

To book a flight, all you have to do is go to, search for your flight and desired dates, and then the booking system will show you partner availability and you can book with American instead. The advantage of using British Airways is that you can book last minute and pay a $2.50 fee for booking, whereas booking directly with American it will cost you a $75 booking fee if you book within the last 2 weeks of your flight. You can refer to this article for a more detailed example of how to redeem Avios.

Our cost for our flight was 12,500 Avios and $2.50 each, and it was a bargain. It definitely helps flying for free, so that you can then be able to spend money on other things at your destination, such as nice meals, shows, etc.
